Traffic regulation orders

Wolverhampton is one of the newest cities in the UK, having been awarded the status in 2000. With a population of more than 250,000, it is significantly more densely-populated than the UK on average.

Like many British cities, this means that Wolverhampton faces continual challenges around efficient travel and public transport – especially when it comes to personal car use. As a result, the City Council undertakes frequent reviews of parking and pedestrian zones, one way systems and other traffic calming plans.

Consulting on traffic measures

In line with their statutory duty, the City of Wolverhampton Council engages with residents on any changes to traffic measures that may affect them – everything from the placement of 'speed cushions' to the introduction of new loading restrictions.

In order to open up access to the widest possible audience, the Council publishes each of these consultations, and all of its Traffic Regulation Orders (TROs), online by default – using Citizen Space.

Wolverhampton make it easy for people to find the engagement activities that are relevant to them by publishing each exercise with a clear title, interest tags ('highways', 'parking' etc) and the geographical areas it covers.

Standardised document publishing

The council also provides all the relevant documentation for each decision under consideration, uploading supporting documents and detailed plans alongside the consultation notice. This means that residents can make a more informed response, with access to all the necessary contextual information in one place.

By using a consistent, user-friendly approach, Wolverhampton are making it easier for both council staff and members of the public to engage with their transport plans.
