Major public consultations

Defra: banning UK sales of ivory

The UK's Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) proposed 'a total ban on UK sales of ivory that could contribute either directly or indirectly to the continued poaching of elephants'. As part of this process, they sought views on banning UK sales of elephant ivory, and evidence on the effect the change could have.

They used Citizen Space to open up an online public consultation on this high-profile issue. There were more than 70,000 responses to the consultation, with over 88 percent of responses in favour of the ban – which was introduced into law following the consultation.

"Citizen Space is a versatile digital tool which is easy to use for both consulter and consultee. The system is already achieving high and sustained standards."

Internal/staff engagement

HMCTS: staff ideas Dialogue

HM Courts & Tribunals Service (HMCTS) is committed to giving its employees different ways of expressing their views within their organisation. As part of this, they wanted to test out an online ideas-generation platform.

HMCTS used Dialogue to open up an internal conversation with staff, inviting them to share ideas about how to improve working processes. With senior staff engaged in responding to the ideas submitted, the Dialogue soon proved successful – both in surfacing new suggestions for organisational improvement and in helping employees feel valued. What started out as a pilot project quickly got taken forward to a wider rollout across the organisation.

"Dialogue has given HMCTS a platform to build our engagement and help take a broad spectrum of ideas and experience into account when delivering change. We feel like we’ve only just scratched the surface of what we could achieve with Dialogue and are excited to see where this leads."

Technical/regulatory review

BEIS: devolving Sunday trading rules

The UK Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS) have been using Citizen Space for a number of years to consult with the public, experts and stakeholders. This has included asking for views on detailed technical and regulatory changes.

For example, BEIS asked for views on whether the government should devolve Sunday trading rules to local areas. Over 7,000 responses were submitted – many from local authorities, business representative organisations, trade unions and businesses. Following the consultation, measures to further devolve the power to extend Sunday trading hours were taken forward through amendments to the Enterprise Bill.

"The Citizen Space survey was crucial for getting the detailed views of our key stakeholders"
